MCOM 50 - Radio Studio Techniques
MCOM 50 is an introductory, hands-on course in radio and audio production. Students learn to create live and prerecorded broadcasts using microphones, mixers, recording equipment, and digital audio tools. They also develop skills in radio formats, broadcast writing, announcing, and station operations.
Students are on air in every course in KCRH’s five-course sequence. MCOM 50 is the first course, where students begin building live announcing and studio-operation skills.

3 units. A full-term class requires 54 lecture hours and 18 lab hours—about three lecture hours and one lab hour per week. The official outline also budgets 108 hours for assignments and practice outside class over the term.
Lab and on-air shifts
On-air shifts are assigned in two-hour blocks. Students are expected to complete at least one shift each week. Station hours follow Chabot College’s hours of operation.
What you’ll do
Practice recording and editing digital audio; combine voice, music, and sound effects; produce live and prerecorded programs, news, interviews, commercials, and promotions; and learn about station organization, FCC rules, copyright, and broadcast ethics. Students also create air-checks and a polished radio audition recording.
Good to know
No previous radio course or formal prerequisite is required. MCOM 50 is letter-grade only and CSU-transferable. After completing MCOM 50, students can continue to MCOM 56: Introduction to KCRH Radio Experience for practical station experience and further on-air DJ and host development.
